Most businesses have GA4 installed but not properly configured. Here are the five most common, and most costly, setup mistakes.

GA4 isn't set up right: The five mistakes we see most

Jay Boston

Almost every business we talk to already has Google Analytics 4 installed. Far fewer have it properly configured. The difference matters more than it might seem — a badly set up analytics platform doesn't just under-report, it actively misleads decisions built on top of it.

1. Conversions were never properly defined

GA4 doesn't automatically know what counts as a meaningful outcome for your business — a form submission, a phone click, a completed purchase. Left on default settings, it tracks page views and generic engagement, but not the specific actions that actually matter. Without conversions explicitly configured, reporting on "what's working" is close to meaningless.

2. It was installed but never connected to Search Console

Search Console shows what people searched to find your site; GA4 shows what they did once they arrived. Without the two connected, you can see one half of the story or the other, but not both together — making it far harder to understand which content or pages are actually driving valuable traffic.

3. Internal traffic isn't filtered out

Staff visiting the company website, testing forms, or checking pages regularly inflates traffic numbers and distorts conversion rates, sometimes significantly for smaller sites. This is a simple filter to set up and one of the most commonly skipped steps.

4. Cross-domain tracking is missing on multi-platform setups

If a checkout, booking system, or payment provider lives on a different domain or subdomain to the main site, without cross-domain tracking configured, GA4 will often record that handoff as two separate, disconnected sessions — breaking the ability to see a full journey from first visit to conversion.

5. Nobody is actually looking at it

Even a perfectly configured GA4 setup is only useful if someone is reviewing it against actual business goals on a regular basis. Dashboards built once and never revisited are common, and represent a significant amount of otherwise-solved measurement work going unused.
