Brand Positioning: Why "We're Different" Isn't a Strategy

Written by Jay Boston | Oct 8, 2026, 5:48:04 AM

Almost every business believes it's different from its competitors. Almost none can explain specifically how, in a way another person could repeat back accurately. That gap — between believing you're different and being able to define it — is where most positioning work actually needs to happen.

Why "we're different" isn't useful on its own

Every competitor believes the same thing about themselves. A positioning statement that could be said, unchanged, by three other businesses in the same category isn't really a position — it's just a claim. A useful position is specific enough that using it to describe a competitor would sound obviously wrong.

What a properly defined position actually contains

  • A specific audience, not "everyone who needs this service"
  • A specific problem that audience has, stated in their language, not internal jargon
  • A specific reason this business solves it differently — not better in general, but different in a way that matters to that audience
  • Evidence that reason is actually true, not just asserted

The test that actually matters

A genuinely useful positioning statement should be specific enough that someone reading it could correctly guess who it's not for. If a position is so broad it could apply to almost any customer, it isn't doing the job positioning is supposed to do — narrowing focus so every other decision has something concrete to align to.

Why this affects more than marketing

A clearly defined position doesn't just shape a tagline. It shapes what gets built, what gets said in a sales conversation, what content gets created, and what gets deliberately left out. Businesses without a clear position tend to say a little of everything to everyone, which usually lands as saying very little to anyone in particular.
